Another Neighborhood Project Completed by Volunteers!

The Friends of Fairfax Station joined forces with volunteers from the Fairfax Station Swim and Tennis Club to plant new landscaping near the club along Robert Carter Road on Sunday, April 29th. There were nearly 20 volunteers on hand to complete the work in record time, as well as perform other tasks, to prepare the club for their Open House on May 6th. A special thank you to Craig's Lawn Care for donating the use of a truck to delivery supplies and remove debris. A new sign is on order and will be installed next month as a finishing touch to this great landscape renovation.

Shown in the photo (left to right): Craig Eldridge, Vinnie Burruano, Ben Stein, Dylan Michaud, Michael Burruano, Mike Anderson, Alex Rider, Thomas Anderson, Theresa Renalds, Kim Herbert, Robert Jenkins, and Nancy Rowland.

The rest of the hardworking crew included Fred Stein, Jim Beaudoin, Brandon Eldridge, Nancy Rowland, Matt Rowland, Sydney Sawyer, Malissa Cashman and Matilda Cashman. Again, THANK YOU to all the volunteers that made this project a success!

Neighborhood Watch Training in June

The next Neighborhood Watch training class will be Monday June 11th @ 7PM, at the Fairfax County Police Dept., Sulley District Station, 4900 Stonecroft Blvd., Chantilly, VA 20151. The class is quite brief, but most informative. Please let Al Carver know if you expect to attend. (gacjr1@aol.com) or 703-250-9213. The training is open to anyone, whether or not you join our Neighborhood Watch, but do consider becoming a member.

FSHOA Yard Sale

The First Annual FSHOA Yard Sale was launched on a beautiful spring morning on Saturday May 5th. Because Fairfax Station had not sponsored a Yard Sale in quite awhile, our target number was 20 households. So we were thrilled to find that almost 50 households jumped in to clean out their basements and to engage in good old-fashioned American salesmanship. The Tennis Club also co-sponsored the event with free coffee and doughnuts at the pool--much to the delight of the shoppers.

Because of the huge response for the initial year, we'll be making this an annual spring tradition for our neighborhood, so please look for an encore next May with even more event development. Big props to Kate Chutuape and Flori Piccolo for their leadership as the co-chairs of the event, Nancy Rimmel of the Tennis Team for creating such a welcoming staging area at the pool, and to Vinnie Burruano for his signs and for his enthusiastic support of the Yard Sale effort.

County Urban Forest Management

You may have recently noticed a bird feeder looking stand in one of the mulch areas at Sangster Station. The County Urban Forest Management group has placed a beetle trap there to monitor for Thousand Canker Disease on the adjacent large Black Walnut trees. The trap will not attract the beetle carrying the disease from outside the area but will reveal the presence of the beetle if it is in the area. This particular disease is a serious threat to the Black Walnut. The disease has been found in the Richmond area but not yet in this area. The trap will be checked weekly and will remain in place through the summer.

Neighbor Spotlight

This section focus's attention on a resident with special creative talents or who has made a special contribution to the community.

Our spotlight is currently on Kim Dalferes who has just published her first book "I Was In Love With A Short Man Once". Click here for details.

Easter Egg Hunt 2012

Spring is finally here, so the Easter Bunny came directly to Fairfax Station on Saturday March 31st to delight the kids in our neighborhood with treats. A happy throng of about 70 children scampered through Sangster Station in search of eggs filled with stickers, fun bands, and candy. Board President Vinnie Burruano, Bob and Nancy Hoyler, Flori Piccolo, and Kim Dalferes helped out, as Head Bunny Barbara Clark called out the Easter Egg Hunt rules and Rob Paxton took photos of the special occasion. Moms, dads, grandparents and a few puppies got a chance to visit each other on the picture perfect spring day at Sangster Station. A three year-old with a chocolate mustache was seen telling Barbara Clark, “That was fun!”
